Connected, automated, and other advanced vehicle technologies continue to shape the Bay Area’s transportation system. Private-sector innovation, changing federal programs, and differing levels of technology readiness across regional agencies create both opportunities and challenges for MTC and its partners. A coordinated regional approach is needed to understand current activities and infrastructure needs, evaluate practical strategies, and determine how advanced technologies can support safety, mobility, accessibility, equity, and system performance.
The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) is seeking to hire a consultant to develop an Advanced Technologies Strategic Roadmap for the Bay Area. The selected consultant will be expected to document existing advanced-technology planning and implementation activities; engage Caltrans, county transportation authorities, cities, transit agencies, and other appropriate stakeholders; identify gaps in digital infrastructure, policy, technical expertise, data governance, cybersecurity, and transportation operations; and evaluate potential strategies involving connectivity, automation, artificial intelligence, safety, tolling, transit and freight priority, paratransit, equity, accessibility, and workforce development. Based on this assessment, the consultant will develop a strategic roadmap that prioritizes potential initiatives by implementation timeframe and level of effort and identifies responsible stakeholders, funding opportunities and recommended next steps.
The Project is expected to begin on January 1, 2027 and be completed by December 31, 2027.
