Throwing Shade VA - 2026

The Throwing Shade VA program aims to incentivize landowners to buy and plant native species in the Commonwealth to provide benefits to our ecosystem and watersheds. Through the Throwing Shade VA Program, Virginia Department of Forestry (DOF) partners with retail nurseries across Virginia to offer discounts on the purchase of native species of trees and shrubs. A $25 discount will be available on eligible trees and shrubs valued at $50 or more with participating nurseries being reimbursed for the discount and administrative costs. The program will run from March 1 through May 1, 2026.This is the third year of the programâs expansion. All 15 retail nursery partners from Spring 2025 have reenrolled in the program to participate again in spring of 2026. For this limited application period, we are seeking retail nursery applicants in geographic regions of Virginia where we currently do not have participating locations. These regions include: the southwestern, eastern and southside portions of the state. The Request for Application will be open to receive applications until September 12, 2025. Following application review from our state ranking team, nurseries will be notified of the status of their participation in the program by mid -October 2025.
