RFP Electrode Slitting Machine

Battery electrode slitting is a precision process used to cut the wider rolls of calendered electrode material (either cathodes or anodes) into narrower strips suitable for assembly in battery cells. This step is critical in preparing electrodes for specific cell designs.
Battery-NY is seeking equipment to provide a flexible and modular anode and cathode electrode slitting capability within a single machine. The calendered electrode, wound on a reel from the previous calendering process, is fed into the slitting machine. The material must be properly aligned to ensure precise cuts and avoid defects. The wide electrode sheet is passed through a set of rotary or razor blades, or cut by laser. These slice the material into strips of specific widths, as determined by the cell design and application. During slitting, the edges of the electrode may also be trimmed to remove any uneven coating or damaged material. This ensures uniform quality in the final slits. Maintaining consistent tension on the electrode sheet is essential to avoid wrinkling, tearing, or misalignment. Once cut, the narrower strips are wound onto separate reels for easy handling and transport to the next manufacturing stage (cell assembly). The modular design will permit easy upgrades in the future as new technologies and processes are developed.
The machine will include a suite of quality control and inspection equipment (web alignment, width accuracy, edge quality, defect detection, etc.) and will log key process and quality data to a data storage system via an IT interface. Incoming materials are scanned, and outgoing materials receive a unique identifier for tracking and tracing purposes. The main requirements are summarized in the following sections.
The machine must be fully installed and operational, with the UAT (User Acceptance Test) completed on or before the date specified in Section 1. This will facilitate the seamless completion of all upstream and downstream process activities within the planned timeframe, ensuring the provision of necessary materials for subsequent activities. For instance, slit electrodes are required to test the cell assembly lines. Any project delays must be avoided, as they will impact downstream processes and, ultimately, the final project completion date.
