Summary:VBPD is doing comparatively well in staffing levels when weighed against other departments in the Hampton Roads area. As of March 2024, the department is authorized for 798 officers, without all of those positions filled. However, with retirements and academy graduations, this number is in constant flux. VBPD aims to bring the department up to full staffing levels and position itself as a premier law enforcement agency, ultimately with a wait list to get into its academy so its recruiting staff are positioned to choose only the absolute best candidates.
VBPD offers a hiring bonus of $5,000 for new recruits and $10,000 for certified officers. Prospective employees can have peace of mind that they’re not joining an agency that is too short-staffed to meet workload and performance objectives.
