It has been recognized by the LCCoC that there is an ongoing need to provide Prevention and Diversion Services for our community members who are at risk of homelessness. Homelessness prevention is crucial because it's more cost-effective and humane than addressing homelessness after it occurs. Prevention programs reduce the number of people entering the homeless system, addressing the root causes of homelessness and promoting racial equity. It also minimizes the trauma and hardship associated with losing one's home and helps individuals and families maintain stability. Lake County hasn’t had a lot of formal methods to address the prevention of homelessness, despite the need as people are often just a paycheck, illness, or some other life event from homelessness that could have been prevented if a simple solution – one time paying for back rent, taking care of utility bills, or resolving property taxes – that can prevent a costly eviction and make all the difference in people’s lives. It is hoped that addressing the needs of those at risk of homelessness it will not only help those at risk, but also reduce the strain on the community’s limited resources.
