Preservation Architect – Fayette County Jail (1907) Historic Structure Report & Redevelopment Plan

The Fayette County Commission seeks proposals from qualified preservation architects to prepare a Historic Structure Report and Redevelopment Master Plan for the Fayette County Jail (1907) , located at 15 Church Street, Fayetteville, WV. The project will document the building’s history, assess its current condition, and identify feasible adaptive reuse options that respect its historic integrity. Recent environmental and structural assessments revealed mold, asbestos, and structural deficiencies, leading to restricted access and renewed concern for public safety. Following consultation with the WV State Historic Preservation Office, demolition was paused due to the jail’s historical significance. The Commission now intends to evaluate preservation-based redevelopment options that may support future county office or community use. The selected consultant must be approved by the National Trust for Historic Preservation prior to award.
