  • Summary It is the City's intent to enter a two (2) year term contract for powdered activated carbon. Deliveries will be made by order releases from the requesting department or division.

    Powdered activated carbon shall be furnished and delivered to the City of Kalamazoo, Michigan for use in the Water Reclamation Plant to operate the biophysical treatment system.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

Powdered activated carbon furnished shall be a wastewater grade carbon suitable for use in the PACT wastewater treatment system.  Wastewater grade carbon shall mean a high particle density carbon that is readily wettable in the treatment system using the City’s feed system.  The carbon shall be produced by a steam or chemical activation process.  Ash content must not exceed 30% of delivered product.

Powdered activated volatile carbon shall have the following properties:

1)      Base Material                                         Coal, lignite, bark char, or wood

2)      Particle Size                                           65% minimum, 80% maximum passing 325 mesh

3)      Tamped Density                                     Report in lb/ft 3

4)      Water Solubles                                       Less than 6.0%

5)      Moisture as Packed                                6% maximum

6)      Ash Content                                           Maximum of 30% delivered product

7)   Mercury                                                     Report in ug/kg using EPA Method 7471A

8)      Silver                                                      Report in ug/kg using EPA Method 200.7

9)      Cadmium                                                Report in mg/kg using EPA Method 200.8

10)    Chromium                                              Report in mg/kg using EPA Method 200.8

11)    Copper                                                    Report in mg/kg using EPA Method 200.8

12)    Lead                                                        Report in mg/kg using EPA Method 200.8

13)    Nickel                                                      Report in mg/kg using EPA Method 200.8

14)    Zinc                                                         Report in mg/kg using EPA Method 200.8

15)     Arsenic                                                   Report in mg/kg using EPA Method 200.8

16)  Iodine Number                                           Report in mg/g

17)  Phosphorus                                                Report in mg/kg using EPA method 365.1

18)  Lithium                                                      Report in parts per billion (ppb)

19)  pH   Achieve acceptable pH (4-10 pH in plant water at 0.5lbs / gal slurry)
