| Project Description |
One-Two Sentences
The Morehead Planetarium Building consists of the historic 1949 wing, Morehead Building, and an addition, built to the east, in 1974. The building presently houses program, educational and administrative space supporting multiple tenants, primarily Morehead Planetarium & Science Center and the Morehead-Cain Scholars Program This project will fully renovate that portion of the interior of the building occupied by the Morehead-Cain Foundation, repair & improve the exterior building envelope (including the roof), as well as renovate associated utility spaces located in the basements of both the addition and the original building. Improvements to the base building environmental systems are expected, including but not limited to: HVAC, plumbing, electrical, emergency power, Fire Alarm, and Fire Protection. Improvements to the building utilities and entry points will be evaluated for inclusion in the project as part of this design effort. A recent Advance Planning study to validate and refine the requested project program and establish a total project budget, was performed by Gensler Architects in early 2026, and will be made available to the selected firm at time of Award. At this time, it is expected that the construction effort will be performed by a Construction Manager at Risk (CMR), to be selected via public advertisement (SCO) process. UNC is seeking statements of qualifications from Architect led project teams, including engineering disciplines as follows: 1. Site/ Civil 2. Building Envelope Specialist 3. Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Fire Alarm, Fire Suppression 4. Telecommunications 5. Structural 6. Cost Estimation The current project authorization is for advance planning only. The selected firm may be retained through full design and construction at the University's option.
