2 INTENDED RESEARCH PURPOSE AND APPLICATION
The microEDM machine is needed to expand the capability of machining test samples in the microscale domain. It
will be used to obtain mechanical properties of specific and small features present in the samples (for example a
particular phase in the microstructure) by machining specimens for different tests with specific dimensions and
shapes.

3 BRAND NAME OR EQUAL:
The use of brand name or equal specifications is for the purpose of describing the standard of quality, performance
and characteristics desired and is not intended to limit or restrict competition. Specifications are given as guidelines
only; Alternate equipment(s) may vary slightly from given specifications. Alternate units are expected to be close in
specifications to desired unit.
4 REQUIRED TECHNICAL/FUNCTIONAL SPECIFICATIONS
Must have ability to prepare specimens whose dimensions (retained after EDM) are <25um
Must have ability to minimize or eliminate EDM recast layer (<0.5 um)
Must achieve the above through the following
* can achieve small spark gaps (<1.0um)
* can achieve small spark duration (<75 ns)
Lower numbers for the above requirements are highly desirable.
Must be able to achieve energy densities < 250 nJ
Surface roughness that is tunable based upon process parameters
Minimal to no recast layer (<5um)
Must be fully M-code or G-code driven for customer specific designs
Capable of variable programming for direct feedback
High precision stage controls to support machining tolerances
Demonstrated ability to machine holes (diam < 125um) or freestanding objects (<20um wide)
Interchangeable tools, including polycrystalline diamond for non-EDM machining
