Overview

Summary

Lakeland Electric intends to replace the existing MGT1 fire suppression system with a self-contained high-pressure water mist fire protection system. The system shall not use electric motor-driven pumps. System operation shall be by stored-pressure nitrogen/water cylinders and electrically supervised solenoid-operated valves.

Actual work completed that would make MGT1 unavailable from 9/13 to 9/19 if possible. We have a planned outage for MGT1 during that period.

Background

Lakeland Electric’s existing MGT1 fire suppression system has reached the end of its reliable service life and requires replacement. The current system contains obsolete components, aging piping, outdated detection and releasing equipment, and legacy hardware that presents increasing maintenance and reliability concerns. Existing fire alarm/releasing control equipment is obsolete and replacement parts are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain.

Lakeland Electric previously evaluated replacement of the system with a new CO₂ suppression system. After further review, the decision was made to pursue a self-contained high-pressure water mist system due to the reduced personnel hazards associated with water mist systems, improved maintainability, reduced recharge complexity, and operational flexibility for a power generation environment.

The project includes replacement of the existing piping, nozzles, temperature detection devices, pull stations, audible/visual notification devices, releasing control panel, and associated suppression hardware. The proposed system shall utilize stored-pressure nitrogen/water cylinders with electrically supervised solenoid-operated valves and shall not utilize electric motor-driven pumps.

Due to the outdoor and industrial environment associated with the MGT1 installation, vendors shall also provide a complete freeze protection solution for all system components exposed to low ambient temperatures. Freeze protection methods may include conditioned enclosures, heat trace systems, cabinet heaters, insulation, or other engineered solutions proposed by the contractor.

The intent of this project is to improve fire protection system reliability, maintainability, personnel safety, code compliance, and long-term supportability while minimizing operational impacts to plant personnel and generating equipment.
