Industrial Metal Shredder
This Request for Information (RFI) is for a potential requirement by the 821st Space Base Group at Pituffik Space Base, Greenland. This RFI does not constitute a request for proposal, request for quotation, or invitation to bid, and no purchase order or contract will be awarded from this RFI. The intent of this RFI is to identify potential vendors and recommended commercial products for the application described below.
Description: The 821st Space Base Group at Pituffik Space Base, Greenland has a requirement to efficiently containerize metal scrap for removal by cargo vessel for recycling in the United States. Pituffik Space Base is located approximately 750 miles north of the Arctic Circle and is not accessible by road or rail. Removal is contemplated in shipping containers via ocean cargo. Additionally, any metal shredder would have to be capable of being delivered to Pituffik Space base via ocean transportation.
To effectively remove scrap metal, the government is considering an industrial metal shredder to reduce metal volume and make removal more efficient. Types of metal that need to be reduced and removed include, but are not limited to, demolished metal roofing, metal siding, metal barrels/drums, metal tanks, metal pipe, etc. Pictures are provided below showing some of the types and conditions of metals requiring removal.
The items below are constraints that have been identified by the government:
- Metal shredder would need to be capable of being operated via electric power (110V) or a generator that runs on JP8 (i.e. jet fuel).
- The height of the space for the metal shredder is 30 feet.
- Metal shredder should be capable of operating at temperatures of -30 C to +20 C
- Metal shredder should be equipped with an emergency shut off.
- Metal shredder must include on-site installation and include operations and maintenance training for equipment operators and maintainers including printed instructions in both English and Danish.
The government is interested in industry recommended commercial equipment that aids in meeting the intent of removing scrap metal from Pituffik Space Base including any auxiliary equipment such as loading/feeding equipment, conveyer belts, spare parts, handling equipment, safety equipment or any other equipment that enhances the government’s ability to safely and efficiently remove scrap metal from Pituffik Space Base. Multiple and alternative commercial equipment recommendations will be accepted and potentially be used to refine the government’s requirement.
Information obtained from industry in response to this RFI may be used by the government to refine the requirement. The intent will be for the government to review any information submitted in response to this RFI to develop the most advantageous commercial solution to shred and efficiently remove scrap metal from Pituffik Space Base, Greenland considering cost, safety and reliability.
Please include product literature that includes salient characteristics/capabilities of recommended solutions including operating volumes/weights, material processing rates, maximum material thickness, material limitations, requirements for weight bearing flooring, etc. Please also include any recommended auxiliary equipment that is recommended to improve efficiency, safety or functionality. Please include recommendations for spare parts to have on hand considering logistics challenges associated with deliveries to Pituffik Space Base. Finally, please include approximate costs for the solution(s) submitted and estimated lead times from date of purchase to delivery and installation.
