Hydrogen is in great demand, but production relies heavily on hydrocarbons utilization. This process contributes greenhouse gases release into the atmosphere. Each kilogram of hydrogen produced creates approximately 10 kilograms of carbon dioxide, but most of it is not being captured. This technology is a cleaner way to make hydrogen through water electrolysis using designed electrocatalysts, with a focus on oxygen evolution as well targeting for hydrogen, using renewable solar, wind or tidal energy.
Description
This invention provides a novel catalyst composition with a unique formulation that involves doping single atoms into a matrix, significantly enhancing the electrochemical properties of the catalyst and superior oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity and stability. Two electrodes create the two reactions, one for OER and one for hydrogen. This invention provides a novel catalyst composition comprising later transition metal-doped nickel-iron-oxide, which demonstrates superior OER activity and stability. The unique formulation involves doping single atoms of transition metals into a NiFeOx matrix, which significantly enhances the electrochemical properties of the catalyst.
