STATEMENT OF NEED

PHARMACY AUTOMATED PRESCRIPTION FULFILLMENT SYSTEM (APFS)
PART I: BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

The Department of Veteran Affairs, Consolidated Mail Outpatient Pharmacy(CMOP) National Office currently oversees seven CMOP facilities located across the United States at the following locations:

The Department of Veteran Affairs Medical Centers(VAMC), Community Based Outpatient Clinics(CBOCs) and Indian Health Service Pharmacies(IHS), sends pharmaceutical prescription orders to be filled and mailed out to Veteran patients, to the CMOPs. Combined the seven CMOPs mail out, on average 530,000 prescriptions daily through the combined use of advanced automation equipment set up into various subsystems that communicate to form the APFS at each of the CMOPs. Based upon agreements with other Federal agencies, there s a potential for future production growth.
