Katepwa Interim Repairs & PIAD Upgrades

Katepwa Dam is located on the eastern outlet of Katepwa Lake and consists of earth embankments, a concrete control structure, and a timber weir. WSA intends to make various improvements and Public Interaction Around Dams (PIAD) safety upgrades at the site, summarized as follows:

1. Construction of rock spur and installation of safety boom, complete with anchor piles at both extents and at midspan as well as a solar-powered beacon
2. Centre island erosion protection and construction of a sediment trap upstream of the existing concrete control structure
3. Channel improvements downstream of the timber weir
4. Miscellaneous steel fabrication and installation at the existing concrete control structure
5. Reinforcement of the timber weir abutments
6. Supply and installation of PIAD upgrades and other signage at site

These upgrades are intended as medium-term interim measures until the existing structure(s) can be replaced with new. Timeline for replacement is equal to or greater than 15 years.

Construction work is intended to begin in the winter of 2024/2025 with the anchor installation. Construction must be suspended in spring to allow for spring spawning window and to pass the spring runoff flows. Fall spawning window will also suspend construction.

WSA is responsible for water management in the Province of Saskatchewan, which includes managing the Province’s water supply, protecting water quality, ensuring safe drinking water and the treatment of wastewater, reducing flood and drought damage, protecting aquatic habitat, and managing dams and related supply channels.
