The height of poles, sha dimensions and wall thickness shall meet the design requirements and
moun ng height of trac signals as set forth in these Specica ons and shown on the Plans. The Plans
indicate bracket arm lengths.
Signal poles and arms shall be uniformly tapered, cylindrical or uted, if specied in the plans. If
uted is not specied in the plans, they shall be cylindrical, and mul -sided poles will not be
acceptable.
Furnish poles consis ng of a straight or uniformly tapered sha , cylindrical or octagonal in cross-sec on,
having with a base welded to the lower end and complete with anchor bolts. All cas ngs shall be clean
and smooth with all details well dened and true to pa ern. Steel cas ngs shall conform to ASTM A27,
Grade 65-35. Gray iron cas ngs shall conform to ASTM A126, Class A.
All mast arms shall be compa ble with the poles in material, strength, shape, and size.
A. Anchor Base
Secure an anchor base of one-piece cast steel or steel plate of adequate strength, shape, and
size to the lower end of the sha . Place the base so as to telescope the sha , and weld at the
top and bo om faces with con nuous llet welds so that the welded connec on develops the
full strength of the adjacent sha sec on to resist bending ac on. Provide each base with a
minimum of four holes to receive the anchor bolts. Provide cast steel bases with removable cast
iron covers for anchor bolts and tapped holes for a aching covers with hex head cap screws.
Provide a welded frame handhole, 5 x 8 inches minimum and located with a clear distance above
the base of no less than the pole diameter, “D.” Weld a 1/2-inch 13 UNC grounding nut to the
inside of the pole at a point readily accessible for wiring. An addi onal hand hole shall be
required at the signal mast arm, if the pole extends more than 1 foot above the top of the mast
arm ange.
B. Sha
Fabricate sha s from the best, hot-rolled basic open hearth steel. The sha shall have only one
longitudinal electrically welded joint and may have electrically welded intermediate transverse
full penetra on circumferen al joints, at intervals of not less than 10 feet. The sha shall be
longitudinally cold-rolled to a en the weld and increase the physical characteris cs so that the
metal will have a minimum yield strength of 48,000 pounds per square inch. Where transverse
full penetra on circumferen al welds are used, the sha fabricator shall furnish to the Engineer
cer ca on that: (1) all such welds have been radiographed and ultrasonically tested by an
independent tes ng laboratory using a qualied Nondestruc ve Tes ng (NDT) technician and (2)
the NDT equipment has been calibrated annually.
An extension to the sha shall be provided for a street light luminaire(s) to be mounted at the
height above the roadway specied in the plans; if no height is specied , it will be 35’ above the
roadway.
Fit the sha with a removable pole cap, a J-hook wire support welded inside near the top, and a
ange plate assembly to match that welded to the bu end of the mast arm, and add a J-hook at
all loca ons where a mast arm is located.
When a decora ve post top xture for ligh ng is noted in the plans, a tenon mee ng the
luminaire manufacturer’s specica ons shall be provided to install the xture or crossarm and
access shall be provided at the arm for signal cable installa on.
If a uted sha is specied, the utes shall be uniform, equally spaced, and well dened.
C. Mast Arms
Provide mast arms fabricated and cer ed in the same manner as the upright sha s or as
specied in the plans and that have the same physical characteris cs.
The mast arms shall meet the design requirements necessary to support rigidly mounted trac
signals as shown on the Plans. All arms shall include a removable cap at the p, grommeted wire
outlets, and signal hanger assemblies of the type and number shown on the Plans, and a ange
plate welded to the bu end to provide a rigid connec on to the mast. The assembly shall be
constructed so that all wiring can be concealed internally.
Connect mast arms to the upright pole at a height necessary to provide a minimum clearance of
16 feet 6 inches and a maximum clearance of 19 feet under the trac signal heads. Install
separate signal heads to provide the same clearance.
If a uted arm is specied, the utes shall be uniform, equally spaced, and well dened.
If a curved arm(s) shown or specied in the plans, it shall be smooth unless specied to be
uted.
If street light mast arms are specied in the plans, they shall be provided as shown in the plans.
Standard street light mast arms have a 6’ rise above the a achment point at the sha and shall
be long enough to posi on the luminaire over the edge of the lane for the approach which it is
to illuminate. The plans may call for mul ple street light arms on some sha s.
D. Finish
Galvanize steel poles, mast arms, and hardware in accordance with ASTM A123.
Galvanize all steel and cast iron components, hardware, and threaded fasteners, except anchor
bolts, a er fabrica on in accordance with ASTM A123, or A153 or A385, as applicable.
When painted poles are specied, the color shall be approved by the City prior to submi ng the
