Home Delivery of Healthy Foods for Needy Families

The Department of Health and Human Services, Maternal and Child Health Programs, needs to be able to have healthy, nutritious food delivered to the homes of needy families. The fresh fruits, vegetables and other healthy foods delivered will help families who live in food deserts and families who otherwise have trouble accessing healthy food, while also serving as a teaching tool to help families see that healthy food can be easy to prepare as well as taste good.

Other County programs may also need food delivery services and would benefit from these goods and services. Other possible programs include Aging and Disability Services; Children, Youth, and Families; and Behavioral Health and Crisis Services. Any County program that works with clients who may have insufficient food in their home and limited means to get more food would benefit.

The Contractor must provide for the delivery of fresh fruits, vegetables, and other family-friendly, healthy foods in food boxes to needy families who are Montgomery County residents. Needy families are defined as families who live in food deserts or have problems accessing healthy food.

Depending on the family’s needs, the food delivery services can be a one-time occurrence or a monthly service. Approximately 200 to 500 families are expected to be referred per year. Food must be delivered within one week of referral, except for “urgent” requests, which must be delivered within four (4) days of referral.
