Description

The Centre of Alberta Natural Area proclaimed October 7, 1989, under order in council 416/98, encompasses the geographical centre of Alberta. The staging area to access the trails which lead to the geographic centre of Alberta, is approximately 25 km northwest of Fort Assiniboine on Hwy 33.

The Center of Alberta is accessible via two different unimproved seismic trails from the staging area. Although both trails are utilized by hikers, equestrian, OHV, and snowmobile users, the northern trail is used primarily by off highway vehicles while the southern trail tends to be used by non-motorized clientele. Both trails lead to a cairn, with a grizzly bear statue on top, which denotes the exact center of Alberta and houses a time capsule.

The overall project objective is to remediate the hiking trail in the Center of Alberta Natural Area to the geographic center of Alberta. Refurbishment of the southern hiking trail will enhance safety for the public, while reducing if not eliminating the environmental degradation currently occurring.
