Summary
The City of Pontiac's Michigan Urban Forest Restoration Project, which involves the Planting of 300–450 trees of various species to restore Pontiac’s urban forest and improve environmental and community benefits. The project seeks to, but is not limited to, restore tree canopy, improve neighborhood environmental quality, and strengthen urban habitat and resilience. The project is funded by the American Forests Urban & Community Forest Initiative.
Background
Pontiac, Michigan contains a mix of native and urban-tolerant tree species, including red maple, box elder, mulberry, oaks, pines, basswood, and other species suited to local soils and climate. As an urban community, Pontiac also benefits from adding a broader mix of native and site-appropriate trees to strengthen long-term canopy health and resilience.
The need for additional tree planting in Pontiac is tied to restoring tree canopy, improving shade, reducing urban heat, supporting stormwater absorption, and increasing biodiversity. Michigan communities have also emphasized urban forestry as a way to improve air quality, resilience to climate impacts, and neighborhood livability, especially where canopy coverage is uneven across the city.
