Emmonak Women's Shelter Design

Project Description: The Emmonak Women’s Shelter (EWS) operates a three-bedroom shelter in Emmonak that serves the community’s 800 residents and 13 surrounding villages. Not only is it undersized and overcapacity, but it is less than 10 feet away from the eroding bank of the Yukon River. Whenever there is a storm, the shelter’s occupants must move from the building to ensure their safety.
The EWS requires a much larger 7000-square-foot shelter in a location safe from erosion. This project includes the design of a new shelter and a structural assessment of the existing shelter to determine the feasibility of moving it. The Consultant is expected to work closely with the EWS to design a shelter that meets their needs. The EWS board would like to review and vote on a layout before the Consultant progresses far into the design phase.
