Iowa State University of Science and Technology (ISU) is soliciting information from qualified Suppliers on behalf of the Material Science and Engineering Department for an Electron Beam Powder Bed Additive Manufacturing System that is fully controllable for a wide range of parameters, including beam trigger control and beam steering/deflection. This equipment will expand the research capabilities of the research group to allow the printing of a wide variety of materials.
The objective for this equipment is to enable the additive manufacturing of complex structures of various topologies/shapes, using a wide variety of starting materials (with different compositions and different material families) while monitoring the process for research activities involving new sensors, cameras, etc. for enabling new degrees of quality control for new materials and structures.
Suppliers should read all materials carefully and note the due date.
Suppliers must direct all questions and comments in reference to this RFP/RFQ to the University Representative using the QUESTIONS tab via this e-procurement system.

2 INTENDED RESEARCH PURPOSE AND APPLICATION
The Electron Beam Powder Bed Additive Manufacturing System that is fully controllable for a wide range of
parameters, including beam trigger control and beam steering/deflection, will expand the research capabilities of
this Material Science and Engineering research group to allow the printing of a wide variety of materials. This is in
direct support of existing research programs.
The objective for this equipment is to enable the additive manufacturing of complex structures of various
topologies/shapes, using a wide variety of starting materials (with different compositions and different material
families) while monitoring the process for research activities involving new sensors, cameras, etc. for enabling new
degrees of quality control for new materials and structures.

4 REQUIRED TECHNICAL/FUNCTIONAL SPECIFICATIONS
Capability for user-designed E-beam Trigger Control
Electron gun: Capable of a max electron beam power of at least 5 kW.
Variable spot size depending upon powder (< 250um min, >3mm max - FWHM)
High scan speeds (report speeds in km/s or deflection angles (°/s) and standoff distance.
Build size: At least 100mm x 100mm (x,y) by at least 250mm in height
Capable of pre-heating part/chamber to at least 1000°C through means of responders choice (e.g., local or
chamber, various heating possibilities could be conceived)
Capable of cooling during builds
Control design to enable in-process control through user adjusted parameters
Two powder tanks with the possibility of using different materials in each tank.
User configurable recoater head
Recoater arm capable of carrying research sensors of user's design.
Backscatter Detector for In-Situ Imaging. Backscatter detector must be designed in such a way as to receive
minimal to no damage from the expected vapor plume.
Available auxiliary ports in high integrity vacuum chamber for user-designed sensors, camera, etc.
Other sensors - either standard or options:
pyrometer, NIR, gas anlyzers, spectroscopies, etc.

Open-platform. Permits the user to control all (or nearly all) aspects
