Reading, Pennsylvania, has long been a center of industry, commerce, and culture in Berks County. Strategically located along the Schuylkill River, Reading flourished in the 19th and early 20th centuries as a hub for transportation and manufacturing, driven by the success of the Reading Railroad, iron production, and textile mills.
Downtown Reading evolved as the city's commercial core, home to historic landmarks such as Penn Square, and showcasing incredible character in the architecture of the buildings while serving as a lively shopping district.
In recent years, Downtown Reading’s complete oversight has transitioned back to the hands of the City of Reading and is undergoing tremendous efforts of revitalization such as investments in business development, beautification, arts and culture, and community-driven events that celebrate its rich heart and history while embracing modern growth. The goal is to grow this area into a dynamic urban center for economic activity, cultural engagement, and civic pride, positioning itself as a premier gathering place for residents and visitors to shop, dine, live, work, study, and play.
