The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Weather Service (NWS), and National Reconditioning Center (ROC), located in Grandview, MO is conducting market research seeking information regarding capabilities for an indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contact (IDIQ) to repair the Differential Planetary Gearbox for the NEXRAD.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Weather Service (NWS) operates 158 Next Generation Weather Radars (NEXRAD) across the country. These gearboxes are used within those 158 NEXRAD sites. The NEXRAD radars provide the capability to detect severe weather and give weather observers and forecasters the ability to issue early warnings to the general public and aviation users. The gearbox is used to move the antenna dish in the horizontal direction or vertical direction while supporting the full weight of the antenna. Failure of the gearbox would prevent movement of the antenna and eliminate the radar’s ability to detect severe weather. There are currently 3 units in stock with a weekly issue rate of .1 (about 33.3 weeks of stock). The average repair turn-around time is 290 days.
The NWS is seeking vendor capabilities for a potential 5 year IDIQ that would involve repairing the subject gearboxes.
