Belle Isle and Rumney saltmarshes in East Boston are experiencing in recent years an acceleration on habitat degradation due to sea level rise over saltmarsh habitat once linked to relict agricultural structures that supported intense farming in the past. Saltmarshes are critical for storm flooding protection for our communities during intense storm events. Saltmarshes are also critical for conservation of trust species like the Salt Marsh Sparrow, a species soon to be federally listed as endangered under the federal Endangered Species Act. DCR seeks to perform an ecological restoration on these sites to increase their resilience through the following
improve hydrologic conditions to re-establish and expand extent of productive high saltmarsh habitat
retain existing areas of high saltmarsh habitat that supports breeding and foraging of trust species
