23CSP003 MCD HET HVAC Replacement

The abbreviated Summary of Work is as follows:

• MCD HET HVAC Replacement Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET M53 A222)

• Replace the existing air-cooled chiller with two new air-cooled chillers of increased total capacity and selected to achieve both summer and winter design conditions. The new chillers would be located on new equipment pads to the southeast of the HET building. Replace the two existing air handling units (AHUs) with two new AHUs, designed to satisfy cooling loads while avoiding ice formation on the cooling coils during winter conditions. In this case, design winter conditions represent high humidity/subfreezing temperature ambient conditions. Install a new fabric supply ductwork distribution system that creates a displacement type environment within the dome to minimize temperature stratification.

• The general Construction Budget range for the project is approximately $2,000,000.00 to $2,500,000.00.

• A Mandatory Pre-Proposal Conference will be held on 10/5/2022 at 10:00 A.M. at the McDonald Observatory in the Astronomers Lodge Conference Room located at 82 Mt. Locke Road McDonald Observatory, Texas 79734 on the first floor. Enter the Astronomer’s Lodge and take the stairs down to the first-floor conference room. Observers sleep during the day in the Astronomers Lodge accommodations so please keep the noise level to a minimum upon entry.

  Parking: Contractors should park in the visitor parking on the top of Mt. Locke and walk to the Astronomers Lodge from there. A sign will be in place that designates 'Event Parking'. There is a map included in the electronic solicitation materials in U.T. Box at the following address:

  This pre-proposal meeting and site visit are in-person and mandatory. A Zoom link can be provided via email only to those who are physically at the meeting in case they wish to pass it on to a representative from their company who wishes to join via the web for informational purposes. Any contractor who intends to bid on the project must have an in-person participant from their company at the pre-proposal meeting and site visit at the McDonald Observatory in McDonald Observatory, Texas 79734. Proposals from contractors who do not sign in for the pre-proposal meeting and for the site visit will not be considered.

  On-site lodging option: Anyone choosing to spend a night at the Astronomers Lodge located at 82 Mt.
