Coroner Indigent Cremation and Burial

The purpose and intent of this Request for Proposal (RFP) is to select a sole contractor that can provide indigent cremation and/or burial for indigent or abandoned remains under California Health and Safety Code Section 7104.

The San Mateo County Coroner's Office ("Coroner's Office") is seeking a vendor to provide cremation services for indigent deceased and possible burial for victims of homicide, children, and unidentified persons. The Coroner's Office has the authority to cremate and/or bury indigent or abandoned remains under the California Health and Safety Code Section 7104.

The estimated annual number of indigent or unclaimed dead within the jurisdiction of the Coroner's Office is between 30 to 40. The Coroner's Office will notify the selected contractor on an as-needed basis.
