SYSTEM DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS FOR A HIGH-RESOLUTION
MULTIBEAM ECHO SOUNDER
The University of Southern Mississippi
Prepared by Steve Stanic and Landry Bernard
May 5/2025
SYSTEM DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS FOR A HIGH-RESOLUTION
MULTIBEAM ECHO SOUNDER
I. Background
The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) has received funding to purchase a
high-resolution multibeam echo sounder system (MBES). This system will be integrated into one
of USM’s UUVs. This system will be used in programs that map the location of specific targets
inside USM’s CUBEnet test range environment.
II. Purpose
This document contains the minimum requirements for a high-resolution MBES system. This
MBES system will be integrated onto one of USM’s SeaTrac USV systems and used for
detection, classification, and localization (DCL) of low/medium/high target strength targets over
a broad range of environmental and platform noise conditions. This MBES system will map the
placement and types of these proud and partially buried targets that will be deployed in USM’s
CUBEnet test range.
III. General Requirements
1. The MBES shall have three system components, a sonar head, a processing unit, and a
controlling workstation.
2. The MBES shall cover the frequency range from 200 to 700 kHz.
3. The transmit frequency shall be selectable while operating.
4. The MBES shall be capable of providing backscattering data over at least 5 frequencies
simultaneously.
5. The MBES sonar system shall be constructed with an aluminum backlid.
6. The sonar system shall weigh approx. 1.8 kg in water.
7. The MBES system shall be modular and easily installed and removable.
8. The MBES shall have both a high-resolution mode and full swath mode.
9. The MBES maximum sample rate shall be at least 50 kHz.
10. The shortest transmit pulse length shall be less than 15 µsec
11. The sonar head and processing shall be connected using a Gbit Ethernet.
12. The operating voltage shall be 48 Volts.
13. Operational control, data quality inspections, and storage will be handled by a vendor
provided hydrographic workstation.
14. The vendor shall provide a list and the cost of all optional spares.
15. The delivery arrangements and transportation costs shall be the vendor’s responsibility.
16. The side can sonar systems shall be delivered to USM’s Marine
Research Center, 1030 30th Ave Gulfport, MS 39501.
1
IV. Specific MBES Technical Specifications
The following tables outline the minimum specifications that the MBES system shall meet to
perform the tasks necessary to satisfy USM’s project objectives.

Less that 0.7at 700 kHz to 2at 200 kHz
The system shall have an SVT sensor as part of the sonar head
IV. Specific MBES software requirements.
1. The vendor shall provide a portable IP67 processing system.
2. The software shall display at least a 200-400 kHz signal bandwidth.
3. The software shall display Seabed images.
4. The software shall be able to display both single and dual swath images.
5. The software shall display the roll. pitch, and yaw stabilization data
V. Options
1. A 19” rack mounted processing unit
VI. Software
The vendor shall provide Complete Software Package (backup) and product
documentation for the MBES system. This includes image resolution software that
provides high-resolution seabed images.
VII. Training
The vendor shall provide training on the operation, software, maintenance and
troubleshooting integration of all systems. This must include mission
planning and basic mission data analysis and display. This training shall take place
at the USM facility located in Gulfport MS.
2
VIII. Proof of Performance
The vendor shall provide a proven record of the MBES measurements and operating
system performance. The vendor needs to provide references where these systems and
their operating system in a substantially similar configuration as specified above have
operated successfully within the last 3 years. The above requested information will assist
USM in determining the bidder’s capability of meeting these requirements.
IX. Warranty Services
At a minimum, the contractor shall provide software/hardware warranty support for one
year from acceptance. Longer warranty periods are preferred. The Vendor shall agree to
repair, adjust, and/or replace (as determined by the University to be in its best interest)
any defective materials at the Vendor and/or manufacturers’ sole cost. The University
will incur no costs for service or replacement of materials during the warranty period.
The Vendor will be the sole point of contact for warranty issues.
X. Documentation
The Contractor shall provide Operations and Maintenance manuals to USM.
Documentation provided shall include, but not be limited to the following:
A. Theory of operation
B. Operating procedures
C. Interfacing instructions with connector pin outs
D. Troubleshooting and maintenance procedures
E. IPB (Isometric Parts Breakout) drawings showing how all parts, especially
mechanical parts, relate to one another.
F. Documentation of the various software packages.
G. All sensor documentation and manuals.
