▬
♦ The 1923 Avon Street Bulkhead project site is located in the Elysian Heights area of Los Angeles, approximately 0.85 miles northeast of the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Glendale Boulevard. At the project site, the northwest side of Avon Street has settled which has caused the pavement, curb, and berm to become cracked and lowered. As a result, storm runoff has flowed off the road and onto the adjacent slope, which has caused an erosion gully to develop. Erosion of the slope has lead to portions of the pavement, curb, berm, and timber guard rail to collapse onto the slope below. These conditions have created a threat to public safety. This project will mitigate the threat to public safety and restore lateral support the roadway by constructing a new bulkhead retaining structure along the northwest side of the Avon Street, near its intersection with Duane Street.
♦ The bulkhead will be approximately 57 feet in length and will be constructed with cast-in-drilled-hole (CIDH) piles with steel wide flange beams and pre-cast concrete lagging. Approximately 9 linear feet of the bulkhead will be constructed with as a cast-in-place wall, in lieu of using pre-cast lagging.
♦♦ The project also includes installation of new asphalt concrete paving, concrete curb and gutter, and a metal beam guardrail.
