Environmental Education Fellowship Program
Description:

The Environmental Education Fellowship Program is designed to meet critical needs of the environmental education and outreach programs of the Department of Environmental Conservation's (DEC) Bureau of Environmental Education, Hudson River Estuary Program, and Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve through 5 and 10-month fellowships for recent college graduates. The Fellowship Program will expand the State’s leadership pool in the environmental education field, which will benefit New York State by ensuring educators can effectively convey the challenges and opportunities facing the State’s environment and natural resources. Under the guidance and supervision of DEC staff, fellows will provide guided programs and lessons to children and families at schools, DEC facilities, community centers, fairs, and festivals, with a focus on underserved communities and Environmental Justice areas. Fellows will participate in program-wide service projects and events to showcase the importance of engaging young adults in conservation and stewardship efforts as part of the Governor’s Adventure NY Initiative.

Fellows who have graduated from college with a focus in science, natural resources, stewardship, environmental education, or childhood education will be placed in DEC facilities (Host Sites). The Contractor will recruit, screen, and refer potential fellows to DEC. Host site supervisors will make the final selection of the individual to serve. Fellows will be mentored and supervised day-to-day by DEC environmental educators and professional staff, who will provide site-specific training related to their fellowship and guidance on effective interpretation, education, and outreach techniques. Fellows must have a valid driver’s license for all sites except New York City and will have access to state vehicles for off-site programming. All materials and supplies to conduct programs and services will be supplied by DEC.
