TECHNOLOGY/BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY

Detection of Radionuclides

Opportunity: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by the Lawrence Livermore National Security (LLNS), LLC under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is offering the opportunity to license the technology for the Detection of Radionuclides (radioactive material and contraband).

Background: Radionuclide detection is critical to detect the transportation of radiological materials and contraband by potential terrorists. Detection of these materials is particularly difficult due to the inherent low-count emissions produced. These low-count emissions result when sources are shielded to disguise their existence or when the sources are in relative motion with respect to the sensors.

Description: The invention relates to a new algorithm for the detection, classification, and estimation of radioactive contraband from highly uncertain (noisy) low-count, radionuclide measurements using a statistical approach based on Bayesian inference and physics-based signal processing.

Advantages: This invention offers a well-founded method capable of making rapid decisions with higher confidence along with the ability to quantify performance. It provides a faster, more reliable way to detect radioactive contraband in a portal based detection systems.

Potential Applications: Radionuclide detection systems, particularly systems inspecting moving containers, especially if there may exist shielding or the radionuclides.

Development Status: LLNL researchers have successfully demonstrated this algorithm on simulated and experimentally controlled data.

LLNL is seeking industry partners with a demonstrated ability to bring such inventions to the market. Moving critical technology beyond the Laboratory to the commercial world helps our licensees gain a competitive edge in the marketplace. All licensing activities are conducted under policies relating to the strict nondisclosure of company proprietary information.

Please visit the IPAC website at http://www.llnl.gov/IPandC/workwithus/partneringprocess.php

for more information on working with LLNL and the industrial partnering and technology transfer process.

Note: THIS IS NOT A PROCUREMENT. Companies interested in commercializing LLNL's Detection of Radionuclide technology should provide a written statement of interest, which includes the following:

1. Company Name and address.

2. The name, address, and telephone number of a point of contact.

•3. A description of corporate expertise and facilities relevant to commercializing this technology.

Written responses should be directed to:
