SPECIAL INSPECTION SERVICES
Cowell Student Health Center Seismic & Expansion Project

The University of California, Santa Cruz, is selecting Special Inspection firms to provide special inspection services including materials testing for the following project: renovations and addition to the Cowell Student Health Center Building.

The building is a C shaped structure with one-story north and south wings and a two story central west wing that is erected over a basement. Because the building is situated on a hill, the west side of the basement is above grade, the south side is partially above grade, and the other two sides are fully below grade. The building is constructed of cast in place concrete. The roof and floor are 7 to 15 inch thick concrete slabs supported by a combination of concrete walls, beams and columns. The foundation consists of concrete grade beams and drilled piers. Typical support columns are one foot square with light reinforcing although some columns are 10 inch round spiral reinforced concrete columns. The majority of the walls within the building are 6 to 12 inch thick steel reinforced concrete and make up the lateral force resisting
system. The exterior walls of the building are constructed of a combination of exposed concrete and glass window wall will be a three-story concrete structure of Type VN construction.

The foundation system will be comprised of additional foundation piers, installation of steel jackets around existing piers, thickening of existing walls, installation of new collector beams, support columns and/or boundary elements, and other corrections to existing support elements. In conjunction with this project, the campus would be required to relocate the building entrance and provide access to the north wing, in accordance with Title 24
and the State of California Accessibility Standards. Construction is scheduled to begin in June 2008 and be completed in approximately fifteen months. The project architect is Hawley Peterson & Snyder of Mountain View, California and the structural engineer is Degenkolb Engineers of San Francisco, California.

Interested firms will be required to submit a Statement of Qualifications and a brochure demonstrating related project experience, using standard forms provided by the University. Successful experience in the following areas will be evaluated: Construction materials testing; construction documentation and administration for public works contracts; past experience with the University of California and other similar complex institutional clients. Selection will depend upon qualifications and interest. Every effort will be made to ensure that all persons, regardless of race, religion, sex; color, ethnicity and national origin have equal access to contracts and other business opportunities with the University. Proof of equal employment opportunity policy will be required of each candidate firm.

Submit requests for forms and further information by email (RFQ@ ucsc.edu), fax (831-423-7436) or mail to:
