Synopsis:

The USDA, Agricultural Research Service, Hard Red Spring & Durum Wheat Quality Lab, Fargo, North Dakota, intends to enter into a single source contract with Perten Instruments, Inc., Springfield, Illinois, for the purchase of a Perten SKCS 4100 Turbo System to analyze wheat single kernel characteristics in a short time for the evaluation of uniformity of wheat physical characteristics in relation to wheat milling and baking quality. Single kernel hardness technology was developed by USDA-Agricultural Research Service, U.S. Grain Marketing Research Laboratory to eliminate visual classification of wheat and the errors associated with subjective grading and prototypes of the experimental system were developed cooperatively with Perten Instruments and was designed as an objective method for classification of wheat for grading. This system will be used to evaluate the uniformity of wheat physical characteristics of wheat breeding lines and contribiute to screening wheat cultivars that have more consistent distribution in quality characteristics. This system has the capacity to handle durum wheats in addition to other wheat classes. Perten Instruments is the only manufacturer of Single Kernel Characterization Systems. *Provide Qualification Statement by Close of Business April 30, 2008, if interested in this procurement.
