| Opportunity Summary |
The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) seeks to address the issue of unused
and improperly stored chemicals in schools. The school lab cleanout program will help
school district staff locate and remove chemicals, provide safe disposal, and encourage
schools to implement best management practices for the use and storage of potentially
harmful or dangerous chemicals. DEQ is seeking consultants with hazardous materials
training and collection expertise, including identification and safe handling of these
materials, and expertise in helping schools locate and remove hazardous materials and
promoting the use of safer alternatives for teaching chemistry.
Consultant will provide training to staff from schools selected by DEQ and its local
government partners. Trainees could include science teachers, janitors, nurses,
principals, or administrators and other school district staff. Consultant will also
provide training to local government staff, who will pack and transport identified
hazardous materials to HHW facilities for safe disposal. DEQ will pay the disposal costs.
This program is based on a pilot program performed in the Portland Metro Region in 2006
under a grant from EPA. Several other governments have similar programs, including King
County, WA.
The contract duration will be approximately three years with an estimated value of $50,000.
