As part of the Better Neighborhoods Program, the San Francisco Planning Department developed the Balboa Park Station Area Plan which would potentially reconfigure transit services and add new housing and retail services in the Balboa Park area. The € Transit Station Neighborhood Development Plan, € a section of the overall Balboa Park Station Area Plan, anticipates the following improvements: a reconfiguration of transit services, including a reconfigured and expanded BART station; a deck over Interstate 280 between Geneva and Ocean Avenues with reconfigured on and off-ramps; a reconfigured terminal facility for the SFMTA''s light rail lines; an improved bus transfer facility; and a number of pedestrian and bicycle improvements. Some of these concepts are long-range plans, such as the decking of Interstate 280, but some of them can be implemented within a shorter time frame.
The SFMTA seeks to support the Balboa Park Station Area Plan by addressing activities along the borders of the Balboa Park Station area where the Interstate 280 freeway intersects with Geneva Avenue, to the south, and along Ocean Avenue, to the north. Specifically, the SFMTA seeks to identify improvements to make the area safer for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists, as well as improve access to transportation services for pedestrians and bicyclists.
