Description
The Travelers? Health Team within the CDC Geographic Medicine and Health Promotion Branch, Division of Global Migration and Quarantine (DGMQ) has responsibility for the prevention of infectious diseases and non-infectious ailments among travelers which is a high priority for safeguarding the health of U.S. citizens. The Travelers? Health Team makes information available electronically, via its website (www.cdc.gov/travel); a toll-free automated hotline; answering public inquiries; and a textbook for health-care providers, Health Information for International Travel (the ?Yellow Book?). The Yellow Book, also available in its entirety online, has long been considered the ?gold standard? of travel medicine, both in the United States and abroad. Information contained in the Yellow Book is heavily relied on by health-care practitioners, travelers, the travel industry, and others who advise travelers, and is frequently cited in medical as well as non-medical publications, including news media such as the New York Times and the Washington Post. The production team for the Yellow Book continues to work towards creating a resource that contains current health recommendations for international travel, delivered in a user-friendly format that can be readily applied in the clinical setting.    The book is published every two years and the changes in the 2008 book included a substantially enhanced chapter on influenza that covers avian influenza and the threat of pandemic influenza. New chapters on skin and soft tissue infections and deep vein thrombosis/pulmonary embolism were added, as well as sections on health risks for humanitarian workers and the differing responsibilities that the clinician, traveler, and travel industry each have in providing and obtaining the best information on health risks abroad.
DGMQ?s objective is to make the 2010 version of the Yellow Book more useful for and more targeted to US travel medicine and general healthcare practitioners. DGMQ is seeking one physician expert in travel medicine to serve as a Medical Editor (ME) for the 2010 edition. It is expected that the scientific and technical contribution of the ME to the 2010 edition would result in increased usability of the book by the 40,000 US general healthcare practitioners and 2000 travel medicine specialists who are asked to provide pre travel advice to patients planning international travel and who see patients after they return from travel.
The cycle of production for the next version (Yellow Book 2010) began in September 2007 and will be completed when the 2010 book is published in May 2009.    The Medical Editor is being sought now to begin work immediately.    The ME will work alongside the current ME, Dr Phyllis Kozarsky, an internationally renowned travel medicine consultant, and Dr Gary Brunette of CDC, who will serve as Managing Editor. It is expected that the overall time spent on the project by the ME will be approximately two months per year for two years.    The ME will not be required to work at CDC; the work can be done from home, but travel to CDC or other locations will be expected several times a year to meet with CDC staff.
Should a firm outside of the immediate Atlanta, Georgia area be identified for this project, all travel must be of the most economic means and must be pre-approved by the technical monitor for this project.    The solicitation with statement of work will be available within 30 hours of this notice.    Please note that firms wishing to bid on this solicitation are hereby advised of the following; all vendors who wish to bid on this requirement MUST be registered and validated in the CCR prior to award of this Simplified Acquisition.    Vendors who submit a quotation are showing that they are already registered or plan to do so.      Quotations will be due fifteen (15) calendar days from the publication date of Request for Quotations or January 21, 2008, by 8:30 a.m. local time, whichever is later. All responsible sources may submit a quotation, which if timely received, shall be considered by the agency.        Quotations must be submitted in writing to Gary    Morgan at gmorgan1@cdc.gov
