Description
TECHNOLOGY/BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY
Shape Memory Polymer Hemodialysis Needle Adapter for
End-Stage Renal Disease
Opportunity: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by the Lawrence Livermore National Security (LLNS), LLC under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is offering the opportunity to commercialize Shape Memory Polymer (SMP) Hemodialysis Needle Adapter for End-Stage Renal Disease.
Background: Hemodialysis continues to be the preferred treatment method for End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).    The commercial kidney dialysis industry includes about 3,200 dialysis centers with combined annual revenues of $10 billion.    Complications resulting from arteriovenous (AV) graft failures account for over $1 billion per year.    A potential cause of graft failures is elevated hemodynamic stress introduced by the dialysis needle flow.
Description:    LLNL has developed a SMP adapter to tailor the fluid dynamics of the needle flow to reduce the hemodynamic stress in an AV graft. The adapter is deployed through the needle into the graft where it is actuated into an expanded shape using thermal energy.    The expanded adapter has a tube-like shape, in which the distal end has a larger cross-sectional area than that of the needle to decelerate the needle flow.    Upon completion of the dialysis session, the adapter is retracted through the needle.    The LLNL adapter is designed to reduce flow stress and, thus, hemolysis. The reduced stress may decrease vascular graft occlusion, which needs to be proven in pre-clinical and clinical trials. Go to: https://ipo.llnl.gov/technology/profile/announcement/ShapeMemoryPolymer.php
to view photos of the SMP Needle Adapter.
Advantages:
?      Reduces hemodynamic stress in shunts during dialysis
?      Adapter can accommodate complex shapes
?      Can operate with multiple thermal activation methods
Development Status:
Preliminary in vitro flow visualization measurements (see above images) and fluid dynamics simulations have been made using a graft model.    Animal and clinical studies are needed. A U.S. Provisional Patent Application covering the design of the SMP adapter has been filed.    A portfolio of background intellectual property is available.
LLNL is seeking industry partners with a demonstrated ability to bring such inventions to the market. Moving critical technology beyond the Laboratory to the commercial world helps our licensees gain a competitive edge in the marketplace. All licensing activities are conducted under policies relating to the strict nondisclosure of company proprietary information.
