Description
Opportunity:
The EPA is interested in finding partners for collaboration on a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) to expand the development of its Web-ICE research program for predicting the toxicity of environmental chemicals. Researchers at the Office of Research and Development (ORD) of EPA are developing Web-ICE as a predictive tool to extrapolate acute toxicity data from surrogate species to endangered species and other taxa with limited test data. These hazard predictions can provide EPA's regulatory programs with science-based information that is helpful in prioritizing chemicals for more detailed toxicological evaluations, and therefore lead to more efficient collection and use of animal test data. Partnering opportunities with EPA exist to expand the breadth of toxicity data and interspecies correlation models as described below.

Overview:
Across EPA programs, there are thousands of environmental chemicals for which limited or insufficient data are available for hazard and risk assessments. These chemicals include antimicrobial agents, inert pesticide ingredients, high-production-volume chemicals, and other organic and inorganic chemicals. Web-ICE is a toxicity estimation tool that currently allows extrapolation between aquatic invertebrates and fish, or between wildlife species (birds and mammals).
This three-year effort is divided into three phases. In Phase 1, available acute toxicity data will be compiled from a diversity of sources and evaluated for conformance to quality criteria.    Data of interest will include acute toxicity data for terrestrial plants, soil invertebrates, wildlife, and standard mammalian laboratory test species.    In Phase 2, interspecies correlation models will be developed and validated for extrapolation between species of terrestrial plants, between species of soil invertebrates, and between wildlife and standard mammalian laboratory test species. In Phase 3, Web-ICE modules will be developed to expand this internet based tool for toxicity prediction and the generation of species sensitivity distributions for terrestrial plants and soil invertebrates, and for wildlife toxicity estimation using mammalian laboratory test data.
Specifications:
EPA is seeking CRADA partners interested in collaborating to further develop the Web-ICE toxicity estimation tool to expand its predictive capabilities to terrestrial plants, soil invertebrates, and for wildlife toxicity estimation using mammalian laboratory test data.    The CRADA is expected to involve multiple partners, including but not limited to non-governmental organizations, private sector companies, academic institutions, and companies with expertise in predictive toxicology.    Common areas of interest and potential collaboration include: 1) acquisition of toxicity data for terrestrial plants, soil invertebrates, and mammalian species, 2) development and validation of interspecies correlation models, and 3) incorporation of predictive models into the internet for access and use by users worldwide.    In addition to technical assistance and other in-kind collaboration, non-Federal partners can also provide direct funding to support specific project tasks.
